Here's what the Epson premium really buys, which alternatives hold up, and where the trap is.
What the TM-m30 gets right
Credit first, because it's earned. The TM-m30 family is built for a decade of daily abuse: the print mechanism, auto-cutter, and paper path are noticeably better than anything at $60. It's the default printer of the tablet-POS world — certified by Square, Shopify, Lightspeed, and most of the mPOS ecosystem — so pairing is documented, support teams know it, and it just works. The "intelligent" models run Epson's ePOS software, meaning tablets print to it directly with no driver and no PC in the loop, and its status reporting (paper, cover, cutter errors) is accurate and complete.
If you run a certified-hardware POS, print hundreds of receipts a day, and a printer failure costs you real money per hour, buying the Epson and not thinking about printers again is a defensible decision. Nothing below pretends otherwise.

- Intelligence. ePOS-capable models accept print jobs over HTTP directly from tablets and phones — no drivers, no print server, no PC.
- Reliability. Better mechanism, better cutter, longer duty cycle, a real warranty.
The uncomfortable part: on a per-unit basis, most of the premium is items 1 and 2 — software and a list entry — not the metal.
Alternatives worth considering

The generic route fits if: your POS prints to any network ESC/POS printer; you're outfitting kitchen/bar/expo stations where volume per printer is lower; or you're replacing your third dead printer and the repeated $300+ hits have stopped feeling like quality and started feeling like a tax.
